Pirates starter A.J. Burnett was diagnosed with an orbital fracture in his right eye today and will have surgery Friday, the team announced.
Burnett fouled a ball into his face Wednesday morning during a bunting competition and returned to Pittsburgh for evaluation Wednesday evening. He stayed in the batter's box after the ball, which came at moderate speed from a pitching machine, struck his face, and left the field as a trainer used a towel to stanch bleeding.
No information was given regarding the severity of the fracture, the nature of the surgery or the estimated recovery time.
