Pirates catcher Russell Martin on Monday was named National League player of the week for the period ending April 28.

In six games last week, Martin batted .375 (9 for 24) and topped the league with four home runs, a .958 slugging percentage and 23 total bases. In a 9-0 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, Martin homered twice and doubled. It was the second time in the past 50 years a Pirate had three extra-base hits, including two homers, in a game.

This season, Martin ranks second among NL catchers with 12 runs scored and fourth with five home runs.
