Starling Marte delivered the knockout blow Monday night but it also served as the ultimate bailout.

After clinging to a one-run lead all night thanks to exceptional pitching by Charlie Morton the Pirates' bullpen allowed the Chicago Cubs to tie it. Marte who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the seventh inning hit a tie-breaking home run
to give the Pirates a 2-1 win at Wrigley Field Monday night.

The Pirates win combined with the St. Louis Cardinals' defeat of the Washington Nationals 4-3 assured the Pirates of at least a wild card berth in the playoffs.

With two outs in the top of the ninth Marte hit a 2-1 hanging slider from Kevin Gregg into the left field bleachers for his 12th homer of the season.

Manager Clint Hurdle used lefty Tony Watson to retire Anthony Rizzo in the top of the ninth then brought in closer Jason Grilli for the remaining two outs and his 32nd save. Grilli did it thanks to some help on defense from Justin Morneau
