My Sunday best …

No relationship fascinates me more right now than that of Suns coach Alvin Gentry and forward Michael Beasley.

Beasley was terrific against Denver Friday night, going 13 of 21 for 29 points and 10 rebounds in 33 minutes. As my colleague Paul Coro pointed out, the Suns had only one greater individual scoring performance all of last season (Shannon Brown, 32 points).

If Gentry can continue to push the right buttons and build Beasley's confidence, the Suns could finally have their go-to guy. …

In recent years, Beasley has been defined more by the poor choices he made than the talent that led him to being the No. 2 overall pick in the 2008 draft behind Derrick Rose.

But after the Suns signed him to a three-year, $18 million deal in the off-season, many applauded the move, particularly Beasley's mentor, Norm Nixon, who said Beasley, 23, could turn out to be one of the great players in the league.

A Minnesota-based writer who covered Beasley when the player was with the Timberwolves told me, "He's a good guy who just took some time to grow up. He's surrounded himself with better people. There are a lot of people around (the Timberwolves) who fear he's going to bust out in Arizona." …
