Today is Brandon Phillips’ last day in camp for a while. He leaves to join Team USA for the World Baseball Classic tomorrow.
“I haven’t thought about it,” he said. “It’s a little bit different. At least it’s for a good cause.”
Phillips has been playing more than usual in the early spring training games. He’s 4-for-14 with two doubles. He hasn’t been told how much he’ll play in the WBC, i.e., will he be asked to play the full nine innings.
“I have no idea what I’m doing,” he said. “I just know I’m going to have red, white and blue on my chest. I’m going to go out there and try to win. If I play nine, I play nine. Am I ready for nine? Hell, no.
“But when you’re on TV and representing your country, you get used to it.”
Phillips could be away for a while.
The U.S. team plays Italy March 9 and Canada March 10 at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale. The second round is March 12-16 in Miami. The championship round is March 17-19 in San Francisco.
Phillips has been driving around Arizona in a white Rolls Royce.
“I had that two years ago,” he said. “I just never drive my cars to field. I had to trick everybody that I had no money. If I would have drove that to the field, they wouldn’t have given me no money.”
