Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, who was recently called out by GM Ruben Amaro, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with left-knee inflammation. Howard received a cortisone shot in his left knee last Sunday, but the knee hasn't responded as hoped.

This season, the 33-year-old Howard is batting .266/.319/.465 with 11 home runs in 80 games. He's been particularly ineffective against lefties and away from hitter-friendly Citizens' Bank Park.
