Running back Peyton Hillis, who went from featured back three years ago to still jobless on the eve of training camp, has signed a one-year deal to join the Bucs.

Hillis and other players were put through a workout by the club earlier today. Most, it appears, the club opted not to sign. Hillis, however, has been asked to stick around just in time for player reporting day on Wednesday.

He’ll immediately be thrust into a backfield with several young, inexperienced prospects behind 2012 rookie phenom Doug Martin, with the depth chart still unsettled.

Hillis rushed for a career-best 1,177 yards with the Browns in 2010, a performance that thrust him into the limelight and landed him a spot on the cover of the popular Madden video game.
