The Carolina Panthers made an upgrade at safety Monday signing free agent Quintin Mikell to a one-year deal.

Safety Haruki Nakamura (concussion) was placed on injured reserve to make room for Mikell a former Pro Bowl player with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mikell 32 spent the past two seasons with the St. Louis Rams starting 32 games and totaling 214 tackles four sacks two interceptions seven passed defensed and nine forced fumbles.

He was released in March in the second year of a four-year $27 million contract signed following the 2011 season. He is expected to compete immediately with strong safety Mike Mitchell for a starting job.
