The Senators' big producers started the pre-season with a bang as did one of their big prospects.

New sniper Bobby Ryan Milan Michalek and 6-foot-5 235-pound rookie Buddy Robinson scored the Ottawa goals in a 3-1 win over the Jets at a jam-packed but mostly quiet MTS Centre Sunday night.

Erik Karlsson showed Norris Trophy form and added two assists while Michalek also had a helper.

Robin Lehner was quite sharp in stopping 17 of 18 shots before being replaced by rookie Andrew Hammond to start the third.

Big Dustin Byfuglien wasn’t in the lineup but the Jets did have plenty of star power in Tobias Enstrom Andrew Ladd Bryan Little Blake Wheeler and new addition Michael Frolick.

Ottawa used 10 players from last year’s team and of course Ryan.

Coach Paul MacLean wanted to give his new No. 1 line a chance to develop some early chemistry and Ryan Jason Spezza and Michalek did some of that owning the puck for much of the early going.

Ryan’s first in a Senators jersey in the opening minute of the second period showed off his goal scorer’s touch. After taking a pass from Karlsson he released a snap shot from the right wing face off circle that zipped by goalie Michael Hutchinson.

Along with an assist Spezza appeared to have a commitment to back checking hard perhaps propelled by the new captain’s ‘C’ on his jersey.

Joe Corvo Act II had a mostly positive start too as the veteran defenceman made a couple of nice plays in the first 40 minutes but then was guilty of over stickhandling by his own net early in the third. No damage was caused.

The Senators took the game’s first penalty — tough-guy Matt Kassian of all people — and efficiently killed the two minutes. Notable moments during the shorthanded situation: Spezza and Ryan were used as the forward tandem and Karlsson delivered a hip check to Blake Wheeler that sent the big Jets forward sprawling to the ice.

Robinson scored his first NHL goal to open the scoring at the 7:58 mark. An interesting prospect with size and speed who played for Lake Superior State University before being signed as a free agent late last year Robinson raced to the net to deflect a Troy Rutkowski point shot after Jim O’Brien had won a draw in the offensive zone.
