With Troy Patton on the disabled list, J.C. Romero is the only left-handed option in the bullpen. If manager Buck Showalter has his way, Brian Matusz may be another one.

Matusz, who was sent down to Norfolk on July 1, has been inconsistent with the Tides. He's 2-1 with a 3.95 ERA in six starts.

On Monday, Showalter, Dan Duquette, pitching coordinator Rick Peterson and Norfolk pitching coach Mike Griffin talked about the possibility of trying Matusz in the bullpen.

"I think that's something you'll probably see us do here very quickly," Showalter said.

"You look at Brian's numbers here and down below, he's been very effective against left-handers.

In his major league career, right-handers are .309 against Matusz and lefties bat .223.
