After Wei-Yin Chen threw seven innings in his first start for the Orioles in just under two months on Wednesday, manager Buck Showalter said that the team would consider sending Chen to the minor leagues to keep pitching during the All-Star break.

The Orioles could have optioned Chen, who was out with a strained left oblique muscle, to Bowie or Frederick immediately after Wednesday’s game, had him pitch early next week and then pitch again next weekend in Texas.

“We weren’t looking to do it. We didn’t want to do it. We hoped that our pitching was such that we didn’t have to do it,” Showalter said.
