Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis, who has been bothered for months by what he thought was a deep bone bruise in his abdomen, had surgery on Thursday to repair his rectus abdominis, also known as the "six-pack" muscle.

The muscle tear was considered extensive, yet Markakis is hopeful he will be ready to play by Opening Day. He has already spoken to Orioles manager Buck Showalter about a potential plan that will ease him into spring training, which begins in earnest with exhibition games March 5.
