Titans running back Jackie Battle has been fined $21000 by the NFL for unnecessary roughness after the league ruled he struck an opponent with his helmet on a run play.

Battle has already appealed the fine. He wondered if the league might be trying to make an example of him because the fine is so high and he’s a first time offender.

“They said I hit him with the crown of my helmet which I think it was borderline because I had a lot of shoulder pad in there’’ Battle said. “But he is going low so I have to get lower than him. … It is just football.”

The league ruled Battle was in violation of a new rule that restricts ball carriers from initiating contact with the crown of the helmet outside the tackle box. On the play in question Battle lowered his head and hit Texans safety Danieal Manning.

“I am definitely not going to change the way I run because as soon as I start thinking and running timid that’s when I am going to end up getting hurt’’ he said. “There is no way I am going to change the way I run.”
