It has been an epic fall from grace for newest Giant Peyton Hillis. He has gone from 1000-yard rusher to Madden cover boy to an open tryout for unemployed running backs in three short years.

In 2010 Hillis rushed for 1177 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Browns including 184 yards against the Patriots. He also caught 61 passes for 477 yards and two touchdowns.

In April 2001 he won a nationwide vote to be the face of Madden NFL 12. He was the toast of Cleveland.

Then at the start of the 2011 season Hillis and the Browns engaged in an ugly contract negotiation. He was accused for faking illness (strep throat) and injury (hamstring) to display his displeasure with talks. It was a distraction the ripped apart the team. Talks eventually broke off.

Three teams later Hillis only 27 is staring at perhaps the final opportunity to reboot his once-promising career.

“I’ve been very humbled over the past couple of years” Hillis said yesterday. “I’ve really found my place. Wherever I am I’m trying to do what is best for the team whether it helps me or not.
