Washington released 40-year-old Jamey Carroll, who was competing for the utility infielder job on a minor-league contract.

Carroll looked just about done for the Twins and Royals last season, hitting .211 with a .518 OPS in 73 games while struggling to control the strike zone for the first time in his career. He’s also no longer really a legitimate option defensively at shortstop, which makes him ill-suited for a true utility man role.
