The Mets have not yet made an official decision, but they are likely to announce in the next several days that Johan Santana will not pitch in the World Baseball Classic, according to club insiders.

The decision will come as no surprise, as the Mets had always preferred to monitor Santana’s health in spring training. The two-time Cy Young Award winner has said that he would like to represent Venezuela, but will respect the Mets’ wishes if they ask him not to.

“Ultimately, he needs our permission to play,” general manager Sandy Alderson said this week. “We’re very concerned that he’d be ready to go and healthy for us. And so there are reasons why players in his situation at the end of a previous season typically don’t play in the WBC.”
