The Mets are closing in on a deal with right-handed reliever Brandon Lyon, a major league source told ESPNNewYork.com.
Lyon, 33, went a combined 4-2 with a 3.10 ERA in 67 relief appearances last season with the Houston Astros and Toronto Blue Jays. He posted a career-high 26 saves in 2008 with the Arizona Diamondacks as well as 20 in 2010 with the Astros, but may not viewed as a candidate to unseat Frank Francisco as closer.
The Mets clearly are displeased with Francisco, however.
If players with past injuries prove durable and effective during spring training, the Opening Day bullpen could be: Francisco, Lyon, Bobby Parnell, Josh Edgin, Pedro Feliciano, Scott Atchison and LaTroy Hawkins.
