Cardinals prospect Carlos Martinez has had difficulty getting a work visa in his native Dominican Republic and the club is not sure when the righty will be able to report to spring training, general manager John Mozeliak confirmed this morning.
Veteran Ronny Cedeno has had a similar issue and is expected to arrive later than the other position players.
Mozeliak said Cedeno's delay is related to his late signing.
Martinez was able to submit the necessary paperwork in enough time to get clearance to come to spring training on time, Mozeliak said. The club hopes to have resolution in the coming week.
"I certainly believe that (MLB) is working hard to try and get this resolved," Mozeliak said. "In the next few days we'll have some idea as to when he might get here. My understanding is there is a new consulate chief and whenever you have that turnover that does sometimes create some new rules, some hurdles if you will. Overall, I don't think we have any concerns except for the timeliness of him not being here."
Martinez, Cedeno expected to be late arrivals
