With a young core of Justin Smoak Nick Franklin Brad Miller and Kyle Seager the Mariners seem to already possess their infield of the future. They may be well-positioned to improve their outfield this off-season.

The Mariners are in a prime position to make a run at Boston Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury who will be a free agent at season’s end according to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal. Here’s his reasoning:

Ellsbury is a Pacific Northwest native born and raised in central Oregon before starring for the Beavers at Oregon State. The Mariners have a glaring need for a leadoff hitter and at center field — where neither Michael Saunders nor Dustin Ackley appear to be the solution. Ellsbury could slide in and provide veteran leadership and a World Series pedigree to a team full of young promising position players.
