Manti Te'o missed the first start of his NFL career Monday night.

He soon could miss his second.

The Chargers inside linebacker did not practice Wednesday as has been the case for more than a month. On Aug. 8 he suffered a foot injury that coach Mike McCoy called a "sprain" and Bront Bird has since taken all the starter reps in Te'o's place.

Bird is tentatively expected to start Sunday against the Eagles. He had a game-high 14 tackles against the Texans on Monday.

It would be premature to pronounce Te'o unavailable for Sunday based on his Wednesday inactivity; the rookie is making strides in his rehab. That said while Te'o has attended meetings and taken mental reps in practice it may take time for him to get back into full football shape after a few August weeks in a protective boot without running.

On Friday Chargers will submit their injury report with game statuses.
