Manchester United should ask for Gareth Bale in exchange for David De Gea if Real Madrid come calling for the goalkeeper this summer.

That’s the view of Rene Meulensteen, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s former right-hand man telling talkSPORT United must play hardball with the Spanish giants over De Dea.

Real have been tracking the glovesman for a number of years and are expected to launch a fresh £60million bid to take the 26-year-old back to his homeland this summer.

But Meulensteen says that sum – which would be a world record fee for a ‘keeper - should not be enough to convince United to sell.

Speaking to the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, the respected Dutch coach said: “You can’t stop the speculation – it won’t go away.

“As a manager you have to say, ‘OK, what is really the case here with De Gea? Does he want to go? Is he going? What is the best scenario for us?
