Liverpool have checked on RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

The 21-year-old only signed last summer from Stuttgart in an £8million deal yet has been pivotal in Leipzig's surprise Bundesliga campaign scoring 14 goals in their rise to second place in the table.

Werner, a Germany U21 international, has plenty of pace and has been utilised in a high-energy, pressing style similar to that used by Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

He can play on either wing and has scored 11 goals in his last 14 games.
Liverpool scouts have watched Leipzig for over a year and have been credited with interest in midfielder Naby Keita and winger Emil Forsberg, however, Werner has also grabbed their attention and fits the profile of player they want this summer.

Werner is fourth in the Bundesliga scoring charts behind Pierre Emerick Aubameyang at Dortmund, Bayern's Robert Lewandowski and Anthony Modeste at Cologne so Leipzig will not sell easily.

Liverpool will back Klopp though to add strength to his squad with striker, left-back and centre-back among the priorities.
