Will the Lions bring back free-agent defensive end Cliff Avril, and could he switch from the left side to the right side now that Kyle Vanden Bosch has been released?

"I suppose he could do a lot of different things," general manager Martin Mayhew said recently. "He's a very good athlete. He could probably stand up, he could play right end, he could play left end, he can do a lot of different things, I think. He's a very talented guy. And I think he's got a lot of versatility."

Versatility is Mayhew's word. Multidimensional is coach Jim Schwartz's word. The Lions like to have options, and Avril certainly could give them that.

The left defensive end faces the right tackle, who generally is considered a bigger, blocking tackle.

If Avril switched to right end, he would face the left tackle, who often is more mobile, athletic and technically sound. But at right end, Avril would be rushing most quarterbacks' blind side.
