Carolina Panthers linebacker and former St. Xavier standout Luke Kuechly was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year during the NFL Honors telecast on Saturday.

Kuechly led the league in tackles with 164 and received 28 of a possible 50 votes. Kuechly was taken with the ninth overall pick in last April's draft.

Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner was second with 11 votes. Packers cornerback Casey Heyward (6), Rams cornerback Janoris Jenkins (3) and Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David (2) also received votes.
