The early exhibition season hasn’t been short on drama. A day after the Rangers forged themselves a tie with a two-out, two-run, bottom-of-the-ninth homer, the Royals did them one better. Brandon Wood, once one of the top prospects in baseball, hit a two-run walk-off homer off RHP Jake Brigham with one out in the ninth Saturday.

After striking out former Ranger Max Ramirez to start the ninth, Brigham walked Sal Perez and then balked. Wood worked the count to 2-and-2 before driving a pitch over the left field wall.

The arms: LHP Michael Kirkman was very impressive in his two-inning outing, allowing just one flare single. He struck out three and 18 of his 25 pitches were strikes. … RHP Randy Wells got three ground balls, including a double play, among the eight batters he faced. In 2008-09, when Wells was at his most successful, he had a 62.6 ground ball percentage. … LHP Joe Ortiz, RHP Colin Balester and LHP Jeff Beliveau combined to retire nine consecutive hitters over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
