Barring something unforeseen happening, Andy Dirks will start in left field and bat sixth for the Detroit Tigers on Opening Day against the Minnesota Twins.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland revealed his likely Opening Day lineup Thursday afternoon. The lineup could obviously change due to injuries to the starters or if the Twins start a left-hander.
Here is the Opening Day lineup for the Tigers as it stands right now:
1. Austin Jackson, CF
2. Torii Hunter, RF
3. Miguel Cabrera, 3B
4. Prince Fielder, 1B
5. Victor Martinez, DH
6. Andy Dirks, LF
7. Jhonny Peralta, SS
8. Alex Avila, C
9. Omar Infante, 2B
The Tigers have three right-handed hitters at the top of the lineup followed by a left-handed hitter and a switch hitter. The lineup alternates between right-handed hitters and left-handed hitters at the bottom starting with Dirks in the sixth spot.
Left-hander Scott Diamond seemed like a solid pick to be the Opening Day starter for the Twins, but he recently said he might not be ready to start right away since he is still recovering from having a bone chip removed in December.
