Quinton Coples, the team’s first-round pick from a year ago, is moving from playing on the interior to outside linebacker in the 3-4 defense, a source confirmed.

Jets coach Rex Ryan has hinted at using Coples as an edge rusher and the team had Coples practice as a linebacker some last year. But now it sounds like he will be playing there a lot more. This also makes the team’s first round selection of Sheldon Richardson in last week’s draft seem more understandable. Richardson appeared to play the same position as Coples, but now the Jets can use Richardson on the inside and have Coples as their edge rusher.

It’s unlikely that Coples will play standing up exclusively. Ryan likes to move his lineman and linebackers around and in some fronts Coples will probably be a down lineman.
