We knew something was up when we saw Jeff Bianchi in the Brewers' clubhouse this morning because he is supposed to be with Team Italy, preparing for the World Baseball Classic.

Bianchi informed us he had to withdraw because of a left groin strain that cropped up Saturday. It was serious enough for him to have to sit out indefinitely, so he withdrew from the Italy team. Instead, he will stay with the Brewers and get daily treatment in their camp.

"It's disappointing," said Bianchi. "This happened Saturday and I told (Team Italy) afterward. I was looking forward to it but it's one of those things that just happens. Right now, I'm treating it and getting it better. I don't know (how long he will be out).

"It's a bummer. Basically, I'll just be here now with the Brewers instead of Italy. I'd rather be here with these guys and getting my work done here."

Bianchi was expected to be Italy's shortstop, and he was looking forward to that experience.

"I won't dwell on it," he said. "There's nothing I can do about it. I'll just take it day to day and hopefully I'll be back soon. It's not the end of the world."
