When the Toronto Blue Jays open their season on April 2, they will do so without third baseman Brett Lawrie.

On Monday, the club placed Lawrie on the disabled list due to a strained muscle he suffered on March 6 during Canada's World Baseball Classic tune-up game against the Cincinnati Reds.

The 23-year-old missed more than a month of the 2012 season with an oblique strain.

Also on Monday, manager John Gibbons stated that J.P. Arencibia get the start on opening day, catching R.A. Dickey.

The Jays also trimmed their roster, sending catcher Josh Thole as well as pitchers Brad Lincoln and David Bush to minor-league camp.
