The Stars after Wednesday’s game sent out an e-mail that there would be a major announcement Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

While nobody would confirm it the expectation is Jamie Benn is going to be named captain.

Stars GM Jim Nill said earlier that he preferred to have a captain rather than three rotating “A’s” like the Stars had last season after they traded away captain Brenden Morrow. He said that decision would come before the end of training camp and it seems Benn is ready to wear the “C” on his sweater.

Remember Nill was with Detroit when they named Steve Yzerman captain at age 21. Benn is 25. He is about to start his fifth full season with the Stars. He’s not a kid anymore.

What’s more he seems ready for this. He worked hard all summer to get in shape. He showed up early for camp. He was a big part of the rebranding announcement in the summer. Basically he’s been playing the role of captain-in-waiting for a couple of months now.

It should be an interesting press conference to hear what Benn Nill and coach Lindy Ruff all have to say. They know this is a new start but they all want to be here for a long time. They are planning for this to be a long relationship.

That means Thursday could be a pretty important day for all three of them.

The Stars won a 3-2 shootout game over Florida on Wednesday and Benn was their best player. He scored a goal had two scoring chances that just missed in overtime and then tallied the second goal in the shootout. He was the first start of the game for his efforts.
