Patrice Bergeron wasn’t sure he’d be able to swing a golf club yesterday.

The center who suffered multiple serious injuries during the Stanley Cup finals 21⁄2 months ago was still feeling the damage to his lower front ribs a broken rib and torn cartilage as he took part in the Boston Bruins Foundation’s 10th annual golf tournament.
Center Gregory Campbell also has not recovered from the broken right leg he suffered blocking a shot against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round of the playoffs.

But with training camp set to open tomorrow at Ristuccia Arena both players expressed optimism they will be ready for the start of the 2013-14 season on Oct. 3.

“There’s still some pain in the rib area” Bergeron said yesterday morning as several dozen Bruins — present past and perhaps future — gathered at The International.

Bergeron has been skating for weeks but wasn’t quite ready for the torque required in golf shots.
“I can chip and putt but I don’t know if I can swing the club” he said.

Bergeron earning an eternal place in team lore continued to play in the title series despite incurring the rib cartilage tear (Game 4) fractured rib (Game 5) shoulder separation and punctured lung (Game 6). The shoulder is nearly 100 percent and the lung is fine he said. Now it’s just about pain in the rib area.

“It’s not bad” he said. “I feel it when I do some core rotation or if I reach out on the ice it’s still there. But I think that’s just normal just part of getting better. My guess is the next few weeks it’s going to go away.

“I feel confident I’ll start the season on time. I haven’t talked to (the physicians) lately. But I talked to them over the summer and they say it’s part of the healing process and at some point it’s going to go away.”

Like Bergeron Campbell earned enormous praise and respect when he continued to play for nearly a minute with a broken right leg he suffered blocking a shot. He has skated several times the bone has healed well but the area remains painful.

“I think that I’m close” Campbell said. “I don’t necessarily think I’m in game shape but I’ve skated with the team three times now and honestly in every session I felt a little better. There are three more weeks to the opening of the season. I think in that frame I’ll have enough competition that I’ll be fine. I have to kind of go at my own level and make sure that I’m progressing in a way that is going to benefit me in the long run. So if there’s things that I don’t feel comfortable doing I’ve got to hold back a little bit.
