Team President Mark Shapiro says the Indians are going to fortify their bullpen over the next couple of weeks with a closer. Shapiro made the statement during an interview Sunday with MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM.

“We will clearly add a bullpen guy and a guy that has some back-end closing experience,” said Shapiro told hosts Jim Bowden and Jim Duquette. “I think in the next week or two you'll see us be able to consummate something there. That's an area of the market where there is opportunity.”

There are several free agent closers still on the market. It’s been reported that the Indians have made a two-year offer to Joaquin Benoit and have been in contact with John Axford, Grant Balfour and Fernando Rodney. Closers Jose Veras and Kevin Gregg are also available.

Chris Perez was the Indians' closer for the last four seasons, but he was released on Oct. 31 and cannot be re-signed until May 15.
