The Indians officially announced the signing of right-hander John Axford on Thursday to a one-year $4.5 million deal. The two sides agreed on the deal Monday, but Axford needed to pass a physical.

Axford, 30, will be the Indians closer even though he spent much of last season as a set-up man after losing the closer’s job with Milwaukee in April.

The 6-5 right-hander closed for the Brewers from 2010 through 2012, saving 106 games in 120 chances. He will replace closer Chris Perez, who was released on Oct. 31.

Axford went 7-7 with a 4.02 ERA in 75 games last season with the Brewers and Cardinals. Milwaukee traded him on Aug. 30.
