In early August a usually even-mannered Eddie Royal rolled his eyes emphatically over what happened to him last year a groin injury in the first practice of training camp from which he never truly recovered until this past offseason.

Health. Health.

“That's the biggest thing for me” Royal said.

He has it now.

The Chargers wide receiver caught multiple touchdown passes for the first time in his NFL career Monday finishing with three receptions for 24 yards. While the productive night wasn't a perfect one — he dropped a fourth-quarter pass that would've converted a key third down — it was significant as Royal exhibited something the Chargers didn't see in 2012 after a strong spring.

Royal is himself.

"It was great just to be out there" he said. "I think you realize how much you love the game when you're not able to play. ... I really appreciated every snap that I took (Monday). I had fun out there. The fans came out and supported us. It felt good to be out there. Just we've got to find a way to win."

Royal suffered a severe groin injury last July that later contributed to a lingering hamstring ailment. The 2012 free agency signing missed six games and made two starts catching only 23 passes.

WIth an eye roll Royal expressed relief last month to have put that behind him but a scare came days later. The slot receiver landed hard on his back when completing a jumping catch Aug. 17 in practice and he suffered a bruised lung and concussion. He left practice in an ambulance and was hospitalized overnight.
