The defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks kept hopes alive at the United Center after fending off the Kings in an elimination game, beating the Kings 5-4 in double overtime.

Michal Handzus, an unlikely character, scored the game-winner shortly into the second period. He took a perfect pass from Brandon Saad past Jonathan Quick.

Game 6 takes place Friday in Los Angeles with the Kings leading the Western Conference finals 3-2.

The first overtime period was frantic as the teams combined for 18 shots as they played without a whistle for nearly eight minutes but it headed to double overtime tied 4-4.

Ben Smith started off the third period, which the Kings have dominated in previous games, on a rebound off a shot by Brandon Saad to tie the game 4-4.
