Over the next few days, Cole Hamels will decide the Phillies' future.
Simply, Hamels will accept or decline a newly padded contract the Phillies reportedly will offer in the next 24 to 48 hours.
If he agrees to the deal, the lofty lefthander decides for the Phillies whether they will compete again for the division title next season and beyond.
If Hamels balks at the big numbers before his eyes, he decides the Phillies must trade him now and begin to rebuild.
Surely, this rebuilding will be dressed with claims of still being able to compete for a division title. But, it still will be rebuilding. Because the Phillies are currently built with veterans Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins on the downside of their careers, this team should be adding pieces to make one more World Series run and not rebuilding.
Hamels' future hinges on what the Phillies offer
