Manager Bruce Bochy has a trait that endears him to his pitchers but at times comes back to bite him. When one of his top starters is on the mound, Bochy gives him a longer rope in situations that would persuade other managers to get the hook.
Bochy has done it with Tim Lincecum and went that way with Matt Cain on Monday night in the first of four against the Cardinals, who got the big hit they needed against Cain on their way to an 8-2 victory.
