The Giants and All-Star catcher Buster Posey have agreed on an eight-year contract extension that will keep him with the Giants through the 2021 season. The deal is nine years total (including this season, for which he was obviously already signed) and $167 million.

The deal is the longest contract ever for a catcher and second-most lucrative in terms of average annual value ever, behind Twins' backstop Joe Mauer.

Posey wasn't up against free agency, as he was already under Giants control through the 2016 season -- the arbitration system pays younger players in one-year contracts in the majority of cases -- but this buys out several years of free agency and marks a huge committment to the reigning NL MVP.
