The Ducks got their first points on this long road trip, thanks to a stellar performance from the top line and some solid goaltending in Frederik Andersen's first NHL start.

The first line tonight was everything that it hadn't been in the previous two games and playing the role of Dustin Penner tonight was Patrick Maroon, who had a heck of a first period. The first time I noticed him, it was actually comical how hard he was working just to keep up with a gliding Erik Karlsson, but as the period wore on, that hard work would pay off.

Seven and a half minutes into the period, Ryan Getzlaf broke into the zone, worked the puck down to Corey Perry in the corner who found Maroon drifting into a soft spot right in the middle of the ice. The passing was so crisp it went right around Karlsson, proving that no matter how well you can skate the puck is always faster. Maroon got the puck on net quickly, it deflected off of Mark Methot's stick and through Craig Anderson's legs to put the Ducks ahead 1-0. It was Maroon's second goal and third point in as many games, respectively.

Immediately after the goal, Sens' coach Paul MacLean put out his energy line with the clear directive to hit anything in black and orange to try and get the momentum back. Emerson Etem got rocked twice on that shift, most notably by Chris Neil in open ice. Regardless of what you think about Neil and/or Etem, that was a gorgeous hit. It worked for a few minutes, until Neil was called for goalie interference in a scramble around the net.

Stop me if you've heard this one before.... The Ducks had difficulty setting up in the zone on the power play, and the momentum was once again neutralized.

With about four minutes left in the period, Craig Anderson got a huge break when he completely missed an attempt to catch a Mathieu Perreault shot and it found the cross bar instead of the net. Two minutes later he wasn't so lucky, as he stopped the puck behind the net for Karlsson who turned it over to Perry right in front of the crease after having been pressured by Maroon and Getzlaf stashed the rebound over the prone Senators goaltender. And the period ended 2-0 for the Ducks.
