While the Cardinals are opening their season here tonight and then moving to San Francisco later in the week, injured third baseman David Freese is preparing to open his season _ but about 2,500 miles away.

Freese, on the 15-day disabled list because of lower back discomfort suffered when he landed awkwardly while chasing a foul ball nearly a month ago, has begun some baseball-related workouts in Jupiter, Fla., and texted manager Mike Matheny on Monday that he was doing well. But, Freese won’t be playing in any games until the extended spring training circuit begins on Friday when the Cardinals meet the Miami Marlins.

Matheny said he thought Freese would play Friday and Saturday in Florida and was still hopeful that Freese could be activated for Monday’s home opener
