The Brewers have traded veteran reliever Francisco Rodriguez to the Baltimore Orioles for third base prospect Nick Delmonico.

Several teams had shown interest in Rodriguez, 31, who signed with the Brewers after the season began but eventually became their clsoer. He was 1-1 with a 1.09 ER in 25 games and had converted all 10 of his save opportunities.

But, with the team mired in last place and Ryan Braun now lost for the season to a drug suspension, it's time for the Brewers to start making moves for the future. Third base is a problem position in their minor-league system and Delmonico, 21, helps fill it.

A sixth-round draft pick in 2011, the left-handed hitter batted .249 with 11 home runs and 54 RBI in 95 games with Class A Delmarva in 2012. He was a South Atlantic League mid-season all-star that year. This season, playing at high Class A Frederick, he was hitting .244 with 13 homers and 30 RBI in 60 games.
