The Tampa Bay Rays have announced that Evan Longoria will be activated for Tuesday's game. Will Rhymes was optioned back to Durham.
Longoria, a three-time All-Star, hasn't played since April 30 due to a partially torn left hamstring, leaving a significant hole in the Rays lineup. He's coming off an eight-game minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham, where he worked exclusively at designated hitter, going 5-for-25 with seven walks.
Longoria will be limited to DH duties, and probably won't be able to play everyday as the Rays ease him back into it. He'll also need some time to re-acclimate to big-league pitching, but Longoria's return will surely boost an offense that has scored three or fewer runs 11 of its past 14 games.
Evan Longoria will rejoin Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday
