NHL teams only have one more day to trade until the Olympic roster freeze kicks in, and once players get back from Sochi there will only be 10 days between the end of said freeze and the trade deadline. To say that things will be hasty and hectic wouldn’t do the situation justice.

Under normal circumstances, a team like the Dallas Stars probably wouldn’t be looking to wheel and deal at the deadline. They’re only one point out of a Wild Card position in the Western Conference and have as good a chance of making the playoffs as any other bubble team.

Given the uncertainty though, it’s not at all surprising that they could look into trading away players like Erik Cole. Compared to forwards like Thomas Vanek and Matt Moulson, Cole could be attractive to teams looking to make “hockey trades” instead of renting help. That’s because he’ll have one year remaining on his deal at the end of this season.
