Beyond the excellent trades general manager Dave Dombrowski made for Max Scherzer Doug Fister and Anibal Sanchez he also formed the Tigers’ formidable rotation with one trade he didn’t make.

He didn’t trade Rick Porcello.

There were plenty of reasons to deal Porcello this past off-season. He was coming off his worst season. Drew Smyly could have replaced Porcello in the rotation finally giving the Tigers a left-handed starter. Porcello was a ground-ball pitcher on a team with below-average infield range (he led the American League in hits allowed last year). And the Tigers needed a right-handed-hitting leftfielder and perhaps a reliever elements Porcello might have brought in a deal.
