As teammates the past three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, receiver Golden Tate and cornerback Richard Sherman had plenty of battles in practice. Tate had a front-row seat for Sherman’s brash brand of competitiveness and talent.

When Sherman recently was named the cover player for this year’s edition of EA Sports’ “Madden 15” video game, Tate said it was a well-deserved honor.

“I’m happy for him,” the new Lions receiver said. “I’m excited for him. He’s a tremendous talent. He works hard, he puts in the work. He’s the best cornerback, best defensive player out there right now. So he definitely deserves it.”

And as far as Sherman’s famous trash-talking ability, Tate said it was never an issue. In fact, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll didn’t discourage players for being themselves if it made them better.
