Derek Jeter, still recovering from offseason surgery on his left ankle, won't be ready to come off the disabled list on Saturday, the first day he is eligible, Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Tuesday.

"He'll be ready when he's ready, no sooner," Cashman said. "He won't be ready April 6. You can't make him ready until he's ready. Same with those other (injured) guys."

Jeter is working out at the Yankees' complex in Tampa after discomfort in the ankle slowed his spring training. He was not at Opening Day Monday at the Stadium; instead, he played catch on a minor-league field.

Tuesday, Cashman said, Jeter "did some strengthening work and physical therapy and he's got a throwing program he's doing. But no hitting or fielding or anything like that."

When will that start? "When he's ready," Cashman said.
