We have focused a lot on Andy Dalton and the deep ball for the better part of 18 months but one area where Dalton has shown improvement during the first three days of camp is on slants and passes over the middle.

During Saturday’s practice Dalton had a nice touch on intermediate routes over the middle.

One of his completions to Mohamed Sanu was threaded between safeties Reggie Nelson and Shawn Williams.

“He’s throwing the ball well. It’s good to see. The receivers are in the right spots we just have to keep building” offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said. “You can never judge improvement until we start playing games. He is more confident in his anticipation.

“He’s always been accurate but he has a better feel in what we do with the concepts. Let’s taper back a little bit until (the opener at) Chicago (on Sept. 8) and see how he does.”

After being consistent on connecting with deep passes the first two days Dalton missed on a couple of deep passes Saturday including one to a wide-open Sanu who shook off coverage by rookie cornerback Terrence Brown.
