The start of Friday afternoon's game between the Cubs and Astros was delayed 3 hours and 18 minutes because of a storm as thunder and lightning provided an eerie backdrop at rainy Wrigley Field.

For the Cubs it was worth it as they emerged with a 3-1 victory as Matt Garza went 8-plus innings to earn the win and Kevin Gregg earned his 11th save.

Anthony Rizzo hit a towering home run onto Sheffield Ave. to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. The first-pitch homer was Rizzo's first since May 18.

Darwin Barney gave the Cubs a 2-0 lead to start the fifth inning. The blast to left gave him his third hit of the day, leaving him a triple away from the cycle. He had singled in the first and doubled in the third.

The Cubs are in the midst of playing 16 of 19 games on the road.

Veteran righthander Matt Garza (1-1, 4.98) got the starting nod against the Astros’ lefty Dallas Keuchel (4-3, 4.23).

Garza threw seven scoreless innings in his previous outing on June 15 at the Mets.

Garza was being counted on as two of the worst teams record-wise in baseball met. He held the Astros scoreless through the first five innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
