Injured Cub starter Matt Garza played catch Sunday and Monday as he tries to get back in a game before the end of spring training.
“I was expecting to be real, real sore . . . but I was muscular sore, not the old sore,” Garza said of his left lat muscle strain. “It’s like I’m activating muscles again. It’s good, it’s just slow.”
The normally impatient Garza says he will continue the slow process of regaining full health.
“I’m in this far so I’m fully committed,” he said. “Just got to take it easy and keep on going. I’m still working out and doing everything like that.”
Garza said he was “still hoping” for a mid-April return to rejoining the rotation.
“We have three weeks left,” he said. “I could be ready to make (a spring) appearance the last week. If not, possibly Houston (March 29-30) and then go out and make a couple of starts and be ready.”
