Connor McDavid, the youngest player on the Canadian under-18 hockey team’s roster, scored once and set up two other goals in a 4-1 win over Slovakia Thursday at the world championship tournament in Sochi, Russia.

McDavid, the OHL’s rookie of the year with the Erie Otters this season, netted the winner late in the first period in Canada’s opening game at the tourney. The 16-year-old assisted on third-period goals by Sam Reinhart of the Kootenay Ice and Sam Bennett pf the Kingston Frontenacs.
